MEMBERSHIP REQUIREMENTS

1.  You must have between 2 and 14 alpacas to join SAFA.
2.  You must agree to the SAFA Member Pledge.
3.  In order to encourage a nationally balanced and representative organization, membership is initially available for up to two (2) representative farms from each state.
4.  In order to support our member farms, membership is also available to all farms that purchase one or more alpacas from any SAFA member farm, or purchase a full-price breeding from a SAFA member farm. They must still meet Requirement #1, though.

If your farm meets these requirements, please check our membership availability list to verify that there are not already two SAFA members in your state.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question: What are the benefits of being a SAFA Member?
Answer: There are many. Please check out the Benefits page for details.

Question: Why only 14 alpacas?
Answer: This number was calculated from ARI statistics on individual farm size. We found that one-third of alpaca farms had 14 or fewer, one-third had between 15 and 67 alpacas, and the remaining third had 68 or more. This represents our breakdown of small, medium and large farms. Therefore, our definition of a small farm is one that falls in the bottom third.

Question: Why only 2 farms per state?
Answer: It's INITIALLY only 2 farms per state. Right now, alpaca ownership is concentrated in only a handful of states. We wanted to make sure that SAFA membership was distributed evenly across the entire US. This is for two reasons: first, so that the views from all corners of the US are represented, and second, so that there was broad customer referral network for our members that reaches into all geographic areas. We're truly sorry if this policy is an inconvenience to anyone, but remember that membership is ALWAYS open to any small farm that is a SAFA customer!

Question: What happens if I join now, then my herd grows to more than 14?
Answer: No problem. 14 is only the upper limit to JOIN. Once you join SAFA, your herd can grow until it reaches 40, at which point you will then no longer be able to renew SAFA membership.
